Private school in Portugal vs the US, UK and Canada: same quality, a fraction of the price

For a lot of the families we work with, moving to Portugal is not only about sunshine, safety and a slower pace. It is about giving their children an excellent education without the fees that had become normal back home.
It is one of the first questions parents ask us on a discovery call: what does school actually cost here, and is it any good? So we pulled together the real numbers. Below is what private and international schooling costs in Portugal, side by side with the US, the UK and Canada, plus what happens at university, where the gap becomes almost hard to believe.
- International schools in Portugal cost roughly €7,000 to €22,000 per year, versus about $13,000 to $50,000 in the US and £15,000 to £45,000 in the UK.
- The Algarve is the most affordable region for international schooling, from around €7,000 a year; Lisbon and Cascais are the priciest.
- Portuguese public university costs about €500 to €1,500 a year for residents, compared with tens of thousands in the US, UK and Canada.
- Curricula are British, American and IB, taught in English, so the lower cost does not mean lower quality.
- To unlock resident university rates, your family needs the right residency status, which is worth planning early.
And that is before university, where the difference is measured in tens of thousands.
What international schools cost in Portugal
Portugal has more than 80 international schools, teaching British, American and International Baccalaureate (IB) curricula, mostly around Lisbon, Cascais and the Algarve. Fees vary by region and grade, but here is the shape of it for 2025/26:
- Greater Lisbon and Cascais are the most expensive. Early years and primary commonly run €6,000 to €12,000 a year, secondary €10,000 to €20,000, and full IB programmes at premium schools €18,000 to €26,000.
- The Algarve is noticeably gentler, with several schools between €7,000 and €10,000 a year.
- Named examples (2025/26): the British School of Lisbon runs roughly €13,000 to €21,000 and Carlucci American International School around €11,700 to €22,700, alongside long-established British and IB schools such as St Julian's in Carcavelos. In the Algarve, schools like Aljezur International run closer to €7,000 to €8,000.
- Local private schools (Portuguese curriculum, often bilingual) are cheaper again, frequently €4,000 to €10,000 a year.
Budget for a few extras too: enrolment fees of roughly €800 to €3,500, application or assessment fees of €150 to €400, and school transport of €2,200 to €3,800 a year if you need it.
What the same schooling costs in the US, UK and Canada
Now the comparison. These are typical private day school fees per child, per year, for 2025/26, drawn from College Transitions (US), the Good Schools Guide (UK) and Our Kids (Canada). Boarding is a different, higher conversation entirely.

This is the part that makes parents sit up. Once your family are residents, your children can access Portuguese public universities at resident and EU tuition rates, which are set by the state and remarkably low.

A three-year degree at a Portuguese public university can cost a family less than a single semester at a private US college. There is a real condition attached, though: to pay those resident and EU rates rather than international fees, your child generally needs the right residency status, which is exactly the kind of thing worth planning years ahead. It is not only about the money
Lower fees would not matter if the education were weaker. It is not. What families tell us they value here:
- Recognised curricula. British, American and IB pathways that universities worldwide accept, taught in English.
- Smaller, calmer schools. Many international schools are modest in size, with a genuinely international mix of families.
- Languages for free. Children pick up Portuguese, and often a third language, as a matter of course.
- A different childhood. Safety, the outdoors and time. Portugal consistently ranks among the safest countries in Europe, and the beach is rarely far away.
What to plan for
A few honest notes, so there are no surprises:
- Good schools have waiting lists. The best places in Lisbon and Cascais fill early, so where you buy and when you apply are linked.
- Choose the area around the school, not the other way round. This is where we spend a lot of time with families, matching a home to the right catchment and commute.
- Residency drives the university rates. The low tuition depends on status, so it pays to understand the timeline early.
- Fees rise. Portuguese fees climb too, but from a much lower base than the 4 to 6 percent annual rises common in the US and UK.
